Fête du Québec
I actually visited her when I was in Montreal for work. On her apartment wall, she had a list of frequently used Bruneian malay terms in the channel which she translated into French as a reference list which allowed her to carry out a conversation in Brunei malay with anyone on the channel! She actually came across as being Bruneian! Amazing stuff!
See you at the i-Center tomorrow nice and early! Good night...

Fête du Canada
Academically however, my ties are stronger with Australia. Incidentally, the Brunei-Australia Alumni Association will be having its annual gala dinner this Saturday. Quite a number of members have not picked up their FREE tickets yet. So if you are a member, or you know of someone who is a member or oz alumni, please pass the word along.
Also, this Friday, the BEDB will be holding its follow-up to the teh tarik sessions. If you have a tech biz idea and are not sure what to do next, THIS IS YOUR EVENT. Dont miss it!

You did WHAT??
The older I get, the more I enjoy Saturday mornings. Perhaps it's the quiet solitude that comes with being the first to rise, or maybe it's the unbounded joy of not having to be at work. Either way, the first few hours of a Saturday morning are most enjoyable.
A few weeks ago, I was shuffling toward the basement ham-shack with a steaming cup of coffee in one hand and the morning paper in the other. What began as a typical Saturday morning turned into one of those lessons that life seems to hand you from time to time. Let me tell you about it:
I turned the dial up into the phone portion of the band on my ham radio in order to listen to a Saturday morning swap net. Along the way, I came across an older sounding chap, with a tremendous signal and a golden voice. You know the kind; he sounded like he should be in the broadcasting business. He was telling whomever he was talking with something about a thousand marbles." I was intrigued and stopped to listen to what he had to say.
"Well, Tom, it sure sounds like you're busy with your job. I'm sure they pay you well but it's a shame you have to be away from home and your family so much. Hard to believe a young fellow should have to work sixty or seventy hours a week to make ends meet. It's too bad you missed your daughter's "dance recital" he continued. "Let me tell you something that has helped me keep my own priorities." And that's when he began to explain his theory of a "thousand marbles."
"You see, I sat down one day and did a little arithmetic. The average person lives about seventy-five years. I know, some live more and some live less, but on average, folks live about seventy-five years.
"Now then, I multiplied 75 times 52 and I came up with 3900, which is the number of Saturdays that the average person has in their entire lifetime. Now, stick with me, Tom, I'm getting to the important part.
It took me until I was fifty-five years old to think about all this in any detail", he went on, "and by that time I had lived through over twenty-eight hundred Saturdays." "I got to thinking that if I lived to be seventy-five, I only had about a thousand of them left to enjoy. So I went to a toy store and bought every single marble they had. I ended up having to visit three toy stores to round up 1000 marbles. I took them home and put them inside a large, clear plastic container right here in the shack next to my gear."
"Every Saturday since then, I have taken one marble out and thrown it away. I found that by watching the marbles diminish, I focused more on the really important things in life. There is nothing like watching your time here on this earth run out to help get your priorities straight."
"Now let me tell you one last thing before I sign-off with you and take my lovely wife out for breakfast. This morning, I took the very last marble out of the container. I figure that if I make it until next Saturday then I have been given a little extra time. And the one thing we can all use is a little more time."
"It was nice to meet you Tom, I hope you spend more time with your family, and I hope to meet you again here on the band. This is a 75 Year old Man, K9NZQ, clear and going QRT, good morning!"
You could have heard a pin drop on the band when this fellow signed off. I guess he gave us all a lot to think about. I had planned to work on the antenna that morning, and then I was going to meet up with a few hams to work on the next club newsletter.
Instead, I went upstairs and woke my wife up with a kiss. "C'mon honey, I'm taking you and the kids to breakfast." "What brought this on?" she asked with a smile. "Oh, nothing special, it's just been a long time since we spent a Saturday together with the kids. And hey, can we stop at a toy store while we're out? I need to buy some marbles.....

I'M ON THE LIST!
For this airborne shot, I had to pose on a bench with my arms outstretched and legs up just so. It had to be precise as I remember the photographer constantly coming over to adjust my position.... As u can see, the result was nothing short of spectacular!! So real one!!! I really believed I could fly! Nathan Petrelli, eat your heart out!
Today, with sophisticated software like Photoshop, it took me less than 10 minutes to do what the photographer probably spent hours doing back then. Below is an example:

Reflecting at Sunset...
By Madeline Bridges
There are loyal hearts, there are spirits brave,
There are souls that are pure and true,
Then give the world the best you have,
And the best will come back to you.
Give love, and love to your life will flow,
A strength in your utmost need,
Have faith, and a score of hearts will show
Their faith in your word and deed.
Give truth, and your gift will be paid in kind;
And honor will honor meet;
And a smile that is sweet will surely find
A smile that is just as sweet.
Give pity and sorrow to those who mourn,
You will gather in flowers again
The scattered seeds from your thoughts outborne,
Though the sowing seemed but vain.
For life is the mirror of king and slave,
'Tis just what we are and do;
Then give to the world the best you have,
And the best will come back to you.

Happy Fathers' Day

A father and a dad are not the same:
One can be a dad and not a father,
Or one can be a father and not bother
To earn through love the more endearing name.
Some find fatherhood a bit too tame,
Leaving all the details to the mother,
Or dumping the sweet burden on another
Man with just a passing twinge of shame.
You have been our dad so many years
That you've become the landscape that is home,
The mountain that we look to from afar.
No matter where we go we're not alone,
For you remain within to still our fears
And be the word that tells us who we are...
Demure...

i-Centre not EYE-Centre!
This'll be an opportunity for participants to learn the basics of writing a business-plan and I think there will be a session on Intellectual Property Rights as well among other topics.
The workshop is also open to those who missed out on the first session or were unsure whether to register during the first session. You will need to register FAST as limited seats will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis!
More details on the BEDB website.

See.Lee.Ya.Kway.Teow
I think the original stall in pasar malam Seria is no longer there as the pasar malam has been relocated to the new food court at the old seria market site. I have not visited that food court and so do not know if the kway teow stall has moved there as well. The one in BSB, for those who don't know, is located opposite Jing Chew.
Jolly good place to enjoy a breakfast of old school fried kway teow with beef and bull's eye on top washed down with a glass of milk tea :)

Cool Copter...
Each engine is supplied by a separate self-sealing fuel tank using dual booster pumps. Each tank holds 1,074 litres of fuel. A fourth tank acts as a reservoir supply, topping up the main tanks during flight. A fifth transfer tank can be added to increase range, as can airborne refuelling. The engines power an 18.59 metre diameter five bladed main rotor. The rotor blades are constructed from carbon/glass with nomex honeycomb and rohacell foam, edged with titanium alloy. Computer control of the engines allows the EH101 to hover reliably in winds of over 80 km/h.
