Zar Zar Cafe

Night before last, Da missus and I ventured a little outside of our usual dinner haunts in search of some out of the way gems and find one we did. Zar Zar Cafe is located among a row of newly built shophouses at Simpang 173 along Jalan Mulaut on the way to KL (Kuala Lurah).

It was a pleasant surprise to find the area quite happening when we turned into the simpang. It was bustling with activity and the carpark was quite full. Anyways, the interior decor of the cafe is classic kopitiam style with a modern touch. You can see paraphernalia lying around from the fifites and sixties including an old radio and a bicycle. There was even a huge poster of Jesselton which reminded me of my dad's hometown.

The owner, Zainal, is a splendidly charming retired police officer who is realizing his long time dream of setting up an eatery together with his wonderful missus. He talked to us about the challenges he faced while starting up his business and how his special honeyed beverages have become quite a hit among the regulars. So da missus ordered a honey lemon tea and I ordered honey coffee, a first for me. Zainal explained that the honey he used is all natural and contains some extra herbs which give it an extra kick.

Foodwise, the specialty at Zar Zar Cafe is the Satay Alloha and the tumpi. We decided to try both. The tumpi was nice and crispy on the outside and soft and doughy on the inside. It is accompanied by chicken or beef curry. Da missus and I liked the chicken better. It was a nice appetizer to start with.

Next was the Satay Alloha. It comes in two preparations, the usual charcoal grilled, and the other, less commonly served at restaurants, pan-fried variety. I personally loved the pan-fried satay. Another difference to the satay is that it is served in "sets" rather than the usual dollar value worth of satays. So you would order small medium or large depending on the size of your group and appetite. The satay itself is just right with a perfect blend of spices, none over-powering the other in the final flavour. The gravy was peanuty rich and thick, just the way I like it. Thumbs up from me.

For mains, both of us ordered the black pepper beef with rice. Interesting preparation jua on this dish. It looks like thin slices of roast beef with black pepper sauce over it. It was delicious and the beef was succulent without the tenderizer taste of typical chinese stir-fries.

Overall, the portions were generous and the prices very reasonable. It was an enjoyable and satisfying meal washed down with the special honeyed beverages, the effects of which I shall not get into in this particular post ;)

If you'd like to try a slightly different dining experience away from the mainstream, give Zar Zar a try. Contact Zainal on 8881575 for reservations.

Selamat Hari Ibu...

"Happy Mother's Day" means more
Than have a happy day.
Within those words lie lots of things
We never get to say.

It means I love you first of all,
Then thanks for all you do.
It means you mean a lot to me,
And that I honor you.

But most of all, I guess it means
That I am thinking of
Your happiness on this, your day,
With pleasure and with love.

Happy Mother's Day To All The Mummies Out There!

The difference between friends...

A simple friend, when visiting, acts like a guest.
A real friend opens your refrigerator and helps himself.

A simple friend has never seen you cry.
A real friend has shoulders soggy from your tears.

A simple friend doesn't know your parents' first names.
A real friend has their phone numbers in his address book.

A simple friend brings a bottle of wine to your party.
A real friend comes early to help you cook and stays late to help you clean.

A simple friend hates it when you call after he has gone to bed.
A real friend asks you why you took so long to call.

A simple friend seeks to talk with you about your problems.
A real friend seeks to help you with your problems.

A simple friend wonders about your romantic history.
A real friend could blackmail you with it.

A simple friend thinks the friendship is over when you have an argument.
A real friend calls you after you had a fight.

A simple friend expects you to always be there for them.
A real friend expects to always be there for you!

Attitude Equals Altitude...

This morning, BEDB hosted a teh tarik session called THINK BIG. It was basically an open session aimed at creating awareness for the BEDB SME Innovation Center which is scheduled to open its doors in August.

The forum was one with a difference in that it was very informal. Even the invitation card stated dress in whatever you're comfortable in. I contemplated coming in my usual Friday morning Jing Chu attire, shorts and t-shirt but decided against it. Good call as I would've stood out like a sore-thumb!!

The turn-out was fantastic with many familiar faces including fellow bloggers Emma complete with bun, LSM aka Joshua heheh, Rezafaizal, the Geek in Pink and perhaps a few others I may not have spotted. Some new faces also and I'm assuming these are the bright sparks with tech ideas they want to take to the next level.

The morning got off to a good start with Stanley Han giving an account of his experiences as an incubatee in NUS' incubation program. Very inspirational young man with great talent.

Rano gave an excellent talk about his 50 dollar startup business, ranoadidas.com. I liked how the name rano adidas came about from a broken heart heheh! What a story that was!

Next the appointed managers for the i-Center, KR Consulting, gave a presentation on what the i-Center was about and how it would help our local bright young sparks develop their ideas into viable and sustainable businesses.

The panel discussion was awesome with lots of participation from the audience. Yours truly was part of the panel as well heheh. I had the opportunity to share with the audience my hopes and expectations for the I-Center.

Congratulations to Dato Timothy Ong and his team at BEDB on a well organized forum with a difference. I look forward to participating not only in more forums like these but also contributing to the SME ICT initiative as a whole in the near future.

You're the most important part of my life...
and you always will be.
I Love you.

Cancer Kills 100 Women...

Today's post is inspired by this headline I spotted at the AIA Financial Healthcheck booth during the Sheraton Bazaar last weekend. I just wonder how much awareness there is among Bruneian women about breast cancer and early detection. Can anyone enlighten us on the programs being carried out in this regard? There's heaps of info available on the net like this for instance which I extracted from here:
"When breast cancer is detected early and treated promptly, suffering and ultimately the loss of life can be significantly reduced. Women are encouraged to ask their doctors and other health care providers about mammography screening. Mammography (and x-ray picture of the breast) is the single most effective method to detect breast changes that may be cancer, long before physical symptoms can be seen or felt. For early stage breast cancer, there are more treatment options, treatment can be less disfiguring and less toxic and survival is improved.

As women age, their risk of breast cancer increases. For most women, high-quality mammography screening should begin at age 40. As risk factors vary in everyone, each woman and her doctor should discuss the plan that's right for her. Most organizations recommend screening every one to two years, some recommend it take place every year. Screening should continue throughout a woman's lifetime.

In addition to the use of mammography, health care providers should also examine a woman's breasts, called clinical breast examination (CBE), as part of routine health care to search for any abnormalities that may be missed by mammography. Breast Self Examination (BSE) may alert a women to any changes in her breasts, but it is not a substitute for mammography screening. The value of BSE is that it helps a woman become familiar with how her breasts normally feel and to notice any changes."
